"Don't ask, don't tell" won't help teens

"No responsible person wants to encourage teenagers to have sex; no one has to. That's what makes a bill moving through the Missouri Legislature so dangerous."

This goes to the overriding American weirdness about sex. We deny the existence of hormones, as well as the resulting physiological drive and curiosity that young people naturally experience. Parents are afraid to address it with their children, and they will sacrifice safety and knowledge in favor of denial and ignorance. If you want to find out where much of this comes from, read Augustine's "Confessions." Early on, the Church decided that sex was a sin, and from then on the world has been in a bit of a mess.
