Support for Civil Commitment Ceremonies

"'We suggest you decline an invitation to a civil commitment ceremony,' Melissa Fryrear told a group of parents. Some busily took notes; a few others wiped away tears. 'So many Christians are yielding on this part,' she said."

The best wedding, bar none, that I ever attended was between two women. The setting was in Tower Grove Park, and it was by far the most meaningful, beautiful ceremony I have witnessed. I am appalled that the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which has become such a thin publication, devoted so many columns and pages to this conference.

FYI, the Bible also says we are supposed to stone adulterers to death, but we have evolved enough over the centuries to delete that from our societies, otherwise half of our righteous politicians would be dead...

You guys are getting it . . . this is exactly how the class blog was designed to be used.

I've personally been somewhat ambivalent about civil commitment ceremonies . . . participation seems to imply that this is "good enough" when I personally support full rights to marriage for gays and lesbians. That said, I usually want to honor whatever decision my friends have made about how to celebrate and honor their love for one another.
